Stellenbosch is one of the most beautiful towns I have been to. Every road is an Instagram worthy picture with the old architecture and beautiful trees that frame the roads on either side. The Stellenbosch area is well known for their wine and their food which I later came to find out after tucking into some pretty amazing food in three days.
Streets are a fusion of old meets new with well maintained old buildings and modern sculptures. The town centre is buzzing with activity and people eating,drinking and basically enjoying enjoying life. First on the iteniary was a walking Food Tour of Stellenbosch Town. As a keen foodie this got my attention and I was rather keen to find out what this lil University town had to offer.

- It is the second oldest town in South Africa.
- Stellenbosch is the oldest wine route in South Africa started in the 1970s.
- The town is named after the founder Simon Van de Stel.
- There are over 100 wineries in and around Stellenbosch.
- Stellenbosch is a popular University Town.
Hanli was our guide who gave us a Taste of Stellenbosch along with a walking tour. The best to explore a city is by learning about the culture , history and of course food. I am big on Food History and eating local produce. First point of call was a walk down the main street which was lined with beautiful buildings and pavements full of people basking in the Winter Sun. The MoederKerk at the top end of the roads was a regal structure almost looking after the entire road. For lunch we headed to Schoon and boy or boy was I swooned over once inside. Besides boasting a Wine Boutique upstairs the original building which is home to Schoon was a Bank. The electic decor had a home feel to it and is owned by a husband and wife duo who are very passionate about local produce and this is clearly evident by the menu and produce they sell in store.An inhouse bakery makes a variety of artisanal breads and cakes and wait for a Gelato counter to finish off your meal but more of that later.Lunch was a mezze platter of meat , cheeses and spreads all served with mounds of freshly baked bread washed down by freshly made Green and Red Fruit and Vegetable “cocktails” , honestly after downing this Green drink I felt very healthy.
Tummies fill we needed to walk for abit, and our next stop was the cutest Chocolate Boutique specialising in Swiss Chocolate. We got to chat with Sam the owner and sample a variety of their chocolates including the Paleo Chocolate which is defo not for me. Hanli armed with our chocolate led us next door to Brampton Wines for our Wine and Chocolate pairing. A side-walk cafe Brampton wines has a feel of Europe to it including chalkboard table tops which you can write on which instantly took me to Barcelona days. A great selection of wines helped us taste our delicious chocolate on another level.
We headed back to Schoon for a Gelato tasting and to try out their homemade sugar cones. This was the first time I tried a salted caramel ice cream and it was divine. For my cone I opted for the berry cheesecake and was not disappointed. The cone was delicious and crispy. Armed with Gelatos we headed to explore more of this University town learning about the history and architecture. Strolling in the afternoon winter sun I felt like a kid on a school trip eating my ice cream.
Next stop was a beautiful space that is home to a variety of specialist producers and I even spotted a store selling some of my favourite local craft from Sugar & Vice.De Warenmarket is home to various artisanal food suppliers and has a food court in the middle of the market. As much as my belly was too full, my eyes were hungry. One of my favourite stalls would have to be the Butcher who had the most gorgeous butchery stands. And the best part you can pick your cut of meat and have it braaied /BBQ ‘ed and served to you in the food court.
The last port of call was at the oldest butchery in Stellenbosch. A firm favourite with the locals known for their Biltong and Boerewors. This family run business echoes memories of days gone by and time stopping. Stepping inside felt as if I was in the 1950’s. Armed with bags of Biltong to take home we walked back to the centre of Stellenbosch where we bid farewell to our fantastic host Hanli.
