A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post on Be a Tourist in your City . In this post I spoke about discovering your city through the eyes of a Tourist. To my utter surprise the awesome folks at Tsogo Sun asked me if they could tempt me with a City Break and instantly I replied YES PLEASE. The invite was for me and my partner to stay the weekend at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani. A weekend away with the best views of Durban and delicious eateries I knew this weekend would be all sorts of delicious.

My main concern was not getting the dates mixed up and I did not but instead I went into the Elangeni to check in only to find I was staying at the Maharani.

“No problem” said the lovely lady at the check in desk. I was checked in given my room keys and directed to the Hotel parking. The Elangeni and Maharani Hotels are both in the Tsogo Sun group and are literally a 5minute walk from each other. Guests are allowed to use all the facilities at both hotels.

Durban View - Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani

Our room was stunning and been on the 28th floor meant we would have a fantastic view of Durban during the day and at night. I was rather excited to catch sunrise. A lil welcome package awaited us in our King Superior room of fruit juice and nuts.

Before I left home I realised that I had not made bookings for Dinner so frantic me called and the ever so helpful Bhavana from Lingela helped in sorting out bookings for both nights.

The Friday night we sampled all the delicious food from the Lingela Buffet. Read about my experience here :

“Having never eaten at Lingela before I was rather keen to try out their buffet which is open 7 days a week for Dinner and sometimes Sunday lunch.

Generally not a fan of buffet meals and always find that it lacks veg options for my mum but Lingela proved me wrong. I called to make a booking for a Friday evening dinner and was told at first it was fully booked however Bhavana the manager said she would see what she could do and would call me back. Within 5minutes a call back happened and I had my booking for the evening. We were welcomed into Lingela by friendly staff who showed us to our table and explained that a special veg option had been prepared for mum and when she was ready it would be brought to her. Our waiter was so attentive to our needs and cutlery and napkins were replaced after each plate was cleared not to mention finger bowls brought.

Now for the menu something for all tastes and a large variety. The menu included a DIY stir fry station where you picked your ingredients and it was prepared right in front of your this had a selection of meats , vegetables , noodles and sauces. The seafood station was rather popular offering a selection of sushi , oysters and fresh seafood to order. The fresh seafood included yellow tail fish , calamari steaks , tuna and amazing prawns. The prawns were served on skewers which makes it easier to serve and doused in either a buttery sauce or peri peri trust me pick peri peri !

A grill station included roasted chicken , leg of lamb and beef with all the trimmings. But next to this station was a Braai grill where you could have chops, steak or wors done for you now I love braaied meat and the chops were delish.

A tandoori oven was part of the Curry station presented in beautiful brass pots. Sheek Kebabs were been made in this traditional oven.

After all that there was still the dessert trolley which had a selection of ice creams , cakes and cheeses.

I was so stuffed after eating here and throughly enjoyed this meal. Mum the vegetarian had a variety of options to choose from and this made me happy. Advance bookings need to be made as Lingela is a popular place for dinner and family celebrations. ”

Now before I go on I need to tell you just how amazing all the staff are and their service is to such a high standard. Often with service it can be inconsistent BUT this was not the case with my weekend. All the staff I encountered at various levels were all so friendly ,helpful and attentive to the needs of the guest.

The next morning we decided on having Breakfast at the Elangeni at The Ocean Breeze.

“Breakfast with the best view of Durban oh yes indeed. This breakfast buffet included indoor and outdoor seating. A large selection of dishes on offer even for Vegetarians. Best stuffed omelette  I have eaten in a long time and the best thing was having an ex student of mine making my omelette. It was a proud moment for me as a lecturer seeing how well my student had done. All the staff were very attentive to your needs and complimentary newspapers awaited you on arrival. The sweet table held a collection of delicious Danish pastries and baked goodies the perfect way to end a divine breakfast. PK one was the managers went over and above his duty in helping us with a late check out as we had a Mangwanani appointment.”

I totally love the Mangwanani Boutique Spa situated within the Elangeni. Read my review here Pampering the African way .

On Saturday night we dined at The Grill Jichana. Having read several reviews I wanted to try out everything on the menu.

“We were welcomed warmly by the team who seated us near a window. Mum and I do prefer a sitting down meal to a buffet. Our very polite waiter had a good knowledge of the menu and was able to make suggestions. After much ohhing and ahhing I decided on the Grilled Prawns served with Jollof Rice ( a spicy Rice dish from Nigeria) and mum being a vegetarian had an easier task than me as there was only one main course option for vegetarians which was Halloumi stacked on Lentils and Polenta. Each course was brought out without too long await been courses. The prawns were well done and not dry or undercooked. Mum enjoyed her dish as well. When it came to dessert we both were rather full but that soon changed after we started to share a Creme Brulee ,I could feel fairies dancing on my tongue and needed to get another one as my bowl had a hole.”

Making me homesick. I have to say SA really knows how to do things in style and the service and hotels there are really amazing. How much was the buffet dinner? It sounds like such value with an amazing array of food!
