High Tea a very a British Tradition

I am a tea drinker though occasionally a cup of coffee is needed to face the day. Coming from an Indian home tea is a popular hot drink often in the form of Chai Tea which is made with spices. After living in London I learnt that any problem or news is shared or fixed over a cup of tea. The British love drinking tea and the link with India during the British Rule is very evident in the food history of Britain.
It is therefore no big surprise that concept of High Tea has roots in England. Like the name suggests it is the afternoon meal between lunch and dinner which was often very late into the evening. Afternoon High Tea is seen as very posh and something the British wealthy ladies indulged in. It consisted of tea served with a variety of sandwiches especially Cucumber sandwiches which is so British , scones , cheeses, fruit and pasteries.
I have never been to a High Tea and it was something I have always wanted to experience. The vision I have in my head is that of ladies all dressed up with beautiful hats sipping tea out of beautiful vintage teacups and their little pinkie finger sticking out. You can clearly see I have read too many British period novels and been watching Downtown Abbey.
So when the idea came up of what do we girls do as a day out ,High Tea was my suggestion. Everyone loved the idea and literally while we were still chatting a booking was made at the Hilton Hotel. As much as I was looking forward to the High Tea , I was more excited to get to see the girls and have a good catch up. And believe me we had loads to catch up on.
The Girls at Hilton High Tea
The High Tea at the Hilton Hotel is fairly new. The foyer area has been converted into a cosy spot for High Tea. Tea was to be served from 2pm till 5pm. The girls had decided before to spend all 3 hours there so we could catch up. A beautiful table was set up with a lovely personalised Welcome note and a glass of bubbly before we could indulge.
High Tea delights
The selection was a variety of sweet and savoury treats. We first had a look at everything that was on offer before we could decide what to eat. Everything looked so good. A large variety of teas and coffees were available. The atmosphere was perfect for a girls catch up with yummy treats to eat. Our lady in waiting ( waitress ) was so attentive to our needs and requests. Did I feel like the lady of the Manor ? Indeed I did ! A perfect way to spend an afternoon with the girls and at a good price of R195 per person and a booking in advance must be done. The girls and I all went home with full bellys, sore cheeks from laughing, lots of pictures and memories and the promise to do High Tea again sooner rather than later. It was a Sunday well spent with those I love and it made my soul happy.
Have you ever been to a High Tea? What do you do with your girlfriends on a day out ?
Be Inspired !
