The Story Behind the #SpiceGoddess
There is always a story behind everything that happens in life. And this is the story of the #SpiceGoddess.
In 2011, when I ventured into the online, digital world of blogging or microblogging little did I know it would bring me to where I am right now. I have shared my story earlier on my blog over here https://spicegoddess.co.za/the-tao-of-the-spicegoddess/
In several interviews I have been asked to share how I selected the name for my blog , BUT I have never actually shared that specific story with you my readers.
How it all began for #SpiceGoddess :
In the Hindu religion the giving of a name to a newborn child is very important. Religious scripts are consulted ,the date and time of arrival are also noted before a priest can give the family guidance on the name of a baby. Every Hindu or Sanskrit name has a meaning to it often a letter of the alphabet is given to the family to help them decide on a name. A special ceremony is conducted with lots of traditions for the newly born.
So keeping all this in mind , it took me ages to decide on the name of my blog. I had an idea of what I wanted but I needed to play around with the words to get a catchy yet name that suited me. After much consideration ,as an avid bookworm I fell in love with the book The Mistress of the Spices by Chitra Banerjee. In the year 2005 the book was turned into a Hollywood movie called ” Mistress of the Spices” with the sweetheart of Bollywood Aishwarya Rai staring in the leading role.
The movie is set in American and Rai plays the role of an Indian immigrant , who owns a Spice Shop. She uses her knowledge of the spices to “cure” the ailments of her customers. There is a twist in the tale and as always a romantic interest. Instantly my attention was drawn to this title for several reasons. I am of Indian origin and I have a passion for cooking.
BUT the name was too long and was already in use so that would mean copyright dramas. And in an instant like a bolt of lightning the words Spice Goddess came to mind. The Spice part represents my Indian roots and my passion for cooking while the Goddess is am important part of the Hindu Religion as well as all women are a Goddess. So the combination of these two words became the name of my blog.
5 Tips for choosing a Blog name
- Play around with words.
- A very long name is not always remembered.
- Think of something that represents you.
- Research names of blogs.
- Consider a catchy and interesting name for your blog.
And then I started my blogging journey. Not knowing how to effectively use all the WordPress functions but I persisted and I am still learning. Then in 2014 ,after reading loads of blogs on Branding and Logos I knew that this was the next step for the #SpiceGoddess. I have some rather talented friends and one such friend designed my logo. My brief to him was there needs to be some pink and something Indian to fit with my blog name. Within just a few days ,I was presented with my stunning logo which I fell in love with instantly.
This logo was so me and it fitted in perfectly with the #SpiceGoddess. My logo and the name of my blog is easily identifiable and catchy. #SpiceGoddess catches your attention and the use of the pop of hot Pink makes it stand out.
Never under-estimate the importance of naming your blog and designing a logo. These become your brand and your trademark. Often when I meet people they refer to me as the “Spice Goddess” and not Verushka. My branding can be found not only on this blog but on all my Social Media platforms and my business cards. I am crazy in love with the #SpiceGoddess brand and logo and am already designing products so watch this space 🙂
How did you name your blog / child/ pet? Every name has a story behind it , I would love to hear your story in the comments.
