Kersfees in London
Living abroad for several years , I have experienced different kinds of Christmas Day celebrations. My most memorable Christmas in London was in 2009, this was to be my last Christmas there before heading home in 2010.
A little background about Christmas here in London. On Christmas Day there is very limited or no access to public transport.London is a city filled with people from all over the world trying to live their dreams and create a better future. It can be a very harsh , cold and lonely place over the festive season especially without loved ones around you.London is a city of travellers and foreigners , a city where friends become family.
I was very lucky during my time to spend. The festive season with friends. My last Christmas was extremely special as it was spent with my South African friends. The day started early with the exchange of Secret Santa gifts and other gifts which was then followed by us all in the kitchen. We all cooked our family traditional dishes which reminded us of home, sang along to 80’s cheesey music while glugging away on my homemade mulled wine. This felt good and left us really feeling the festive season love. The table was set and adorned with Christmas baubles. And then it was time to sit down to eat our big fat SAFFA Christmas meal.It was a special lunch with friends laughing, eating and drinking.
And after eating and drinking too much we all retired to the lounge with blankets on the couch and watched a marathon session of Leon Schuster movies. How much more South African can you get???
To me this Christmas spent with friends in London was very special as it brought people together and our common factor was that we were all South African regardless of race, language or religion.
